This experiment will show kids how dyed carnations will look like. Here are the materials you will need:
- White carnation flowers with long stems
- Blue, red and yellow food coloring
- Three jars
- Water
Put water in each jar and mix one food coloring per jar. Place the carnation on each jar and wait for an hour for the result. Will the food coloring change the carnation from white to a different color? The answer is yes.
After about an hour, the petals will change into the color of the water and food coloring mixture. It is like the flower drank up the water through the stems. This process is called transpiration.
The result is amazing! The flowers turned from plain to really colorful ones. If you put the red flower in a jar with a blue mixture, it will also sip and turn some parts of the petals into blue. Try it with your Sunday School class and they will be in awe of the results.
