Though there are Sundays that I’m sure we all come home tired, frustrated and not knowing why nothing went the way we expected, this quote helps me think about exactly why I do what I do and probably why you do what you do. Youth Ministry is such an important ministry, and for that, gets a ton of support and attention, but if you look at the statistics, most kids have well made their decisions on God by age 14 or younger. I see Youth Ministry as the Emergency Room, where there is a lot of “excitement” ,sometimes of incredible underdog situations, sometimes of great sadness, because by the point they get to you, they may be pretty well roughed up. Children’s Ministry, or Kidmin if you prefer, is the doctor that helped them have a right diet and regular exercise before they needed to go to the ER for their heart attack. That may sound anti-climactic but, I think that’s old thinking. Drama is over-rated. We are in the business of building saints. Taking people(children) from the path of a “broken man/woman” to a strong, active, fully involved man or woman, who may in but a short time work along side us and eventually replace us.
We rid the world of broken men and women, one child at a time. Now, let’s make the most of our week and have ourselves another great Sunday!
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” –Frederick Douglass
